Testimonials
“I’ve been studying Japanese with Mayumi for over seven years. She has always done a wonderful job of putting together interesting lessons that have the right mix for my skill levels. And if I don’t understand something, she’s great at approaching it from a different angle to help me get it. She’s also a very friendly and patient person - she never makes me feel frustrated when I’m having difficulty learning something. I look forward to our session every week!
あいかわらずありがとう、マユミ先生!””
“I’ve been taking lessons from Mayumi-sensei for about three years, originally with the aim of taking (and passing) level 1 of the JLPT. I had hit a plateau and my scores weren’t improving, so Mayumi-sensei rearranged her standard lessons and instead we’ve been working through native-level literature. It’s been so much more fun! I notice every week that my vocabulary and reading are improving, and using the book allows Mayumi-sensei to give grammar points additional context. Her help understanding nuance and specific usage has been invaluable. I might not pass the test this year, but my ability to speak smoothly with my Japanese colleagues has really improved thanks to her lessons.”
About Me
My name is Mayumi, and I was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. I attended Sophia University in Tokyo and later moved to the United States to earn my Master’s Degree in Mathematics. After graduating, I embarked on a journey around the world, living in Japan, Hong Kong, and London, before eventually finding my way to my now home, San Francisco.
experience
I have been teaching and sharing my knowledge of Japanese for the past 12 years, creating and tailoring elaborate lesson plans to fit each of my students’ needs. After just one lesson, all of my students see progress and immediately gain an appetite for further knowledge.
types of lessons offered (all ages and skill levels)
For my younger students, we focus on learning by ear, through speech and using visual tools.
For my adult students, we study Japanese through a cultural lens, placing an emphasis on actively speaking throughout the lesson.
I also instruct a personal JLPT preparation course.
Remote lessons available, all geographic locations welcome.
